Arabic calligraphy styles, explained

The 250+ styles above fall into six families — five rooted in centuries-old calligraphy traditions, plus modern typefaces built for screens.

Arabic calligraphy isn't a single script but a family of writing styles, each shaped by a different era and purpose. Over more than a thousand years, scribes refined distinct "hands" — some angular and architectural, some rounded and built for reading, some so ornamental they were once reserved for royal decrees. The proportional rules behind most of them were formalised in the 10th century under the classical "six pens," and today's digital Arabic fonts still inherit those proportions: a screen typeface like Cairo takes its rhythm from Naskh, while a bold display face leans on the geometry of Kufic.

Choosing between the families usually comes down to two questions — how much text are you setting, and what feeling does the piece need? Naskh is the readable workhorse for anything longer than a line or two, from books and articles to Qur'anic verses. Kufic, the oldest style, is built from straight lines and holds its shape at small sizes, which is why it suits logos and headings. Thuluth is the most decorative of the classical scripts, made for certificates, wedding headlines, and short ceremonial phrases rather than body text. Ruq'ah is quick, plain, everyday handwriting; Nasta'liq (Farisi) hangs on a sloping diagonal baseline and is standard for Persian and Urdu poetry; and the Modern & Digital category collects contemporary families drawn for screens and branding.

In short, long passages need Naskh's legibility, while short, high-impact text has room for Kufic's geometry or Thuluth's ornament.
