Amiri — Free Arabic Google Font
Amiri revives the classical Naskh typeface pioneered by Cairo's Bulaq Press (Amiria Press) in the early 20th century — the style much of the printed Arabic-language book tradition is built on. Khaled Hosny and Sebastian Kosch's digital revival keeps that scholarly, book-page character, making it a natural fit for long-form reading.
About Amiri
Amiri is a classical Naskh typeface for books and running text by Khaled Hosny, with Sebastian Kosch also credited, and it has been on Google Fonts since 2012. It revives the typeface pioneered in the early 20th century by the Bulaq Press in Cairo, also known as the Amiria Press, which gives the font its name. This site also carries Amiri Quran, a separate version of the family for Qur'anic text.
A scholarly revival of the classical typefaces used by Bulaq Press in early-20th-century Cairo, Amiri carries real historical weight while staying legible at body-text sizes — the standard choice for long-form Arabic reading, from articles to full ebooks.
Designers: Khaled Hosny, Sebastian Kosch
Best used for
- Books and long-form reading
- Qur'anic and religious text
- Scholarly and editorial publishing
How Amiri compares
Against Scheherazade New, Amiri is more calligraphic and bookish, with the proportions of a classic Cairo printing type, while Scheherazade New puts complete Unicode coverage first. Next to Noto Naskh Arabic, Amiri has more traditional flavour and comes with true italics in Regular and Bold, which Noto Naskh does not offer. Choose Amiri for books, essays and religious text where a classical printed look is the goal.
Tips for using Amiri
Amiri is a text face: set it at comfortable reading sizes for articles, books and religious text, and give it generous line spacing, since vowel marks need room above and below. It handles fully vocalised text well. Its Latin is a serif design, so it pairs most naturally with other book serifs rather than geometric sans faces.
