Tajawal — Free Arabic Google Font

Tajawal is a low-contrast geometric sans from Boutros™ that keeps one foot in traditional Arabic calligraphy while reading as thoroughly modern. Its fluid, evenly-weighted letterforms make it equally at home in a website's body text or paired with Latin typefaces in print.

About Tajawal

Tajawal comes from Boutros, the Arabic type foundry of Mourad Boutros, with Soulaf Khalifeh also credited on Google Fonts. It was added to Google Fonts in 2018 in seven weights, from ExtraLight to Black. The brief was a low-contrast Arabic paired with a sans-serif Latin, following a modern geometric style while still respecting the calligraphic rules of Arabic letter construction, for both print and web use.

Tajawal comes from Boutros™ and leans slightly warmer than most geometric Arabic sans fonts, with rounder terminals that read less "corporate" than Cairo at display sizes — a reasonable pick when a brand wants approachable rather than strictly neutral.

  • Pairing with Latin typefaces

How Tajawal compares

Almarai is its closest relative here — also by Boutros, also low in contrast — but Almarai was tuned for on-screen reading and ships only four weights, while Tajawal's seven make it the better choice for a full typographic hierarchy. Compared with Cairo, Tajawal has none of the Kufi angularity, so it reads quieter and more neutral in long text.

Tips for using Tajawal

Tajawal works at body sizes in Regular and Medium and holds up as a headline face from Bold upward. Its designers intended it to sit alongside other Latin typefaces, so pairing it with a geometric Latin sans is natural. If you set vocalised text, check the diacritics in the preview above at your real size before committing.
